Happy Thanksgiving
With all the wonderful holiday traditions and associations with family and friends, let's not forget the fantastic health benefits we can glean from this time of Thanksgiving.
Turkey is a terrific source of healthy protein. According to Wholefoods.com;
"A four ounce serving provides 65.1% of the daily value for protein, along with 11.9% of the daily value for saturated fat, about half the amount of saturated fat found in red meat."
Turkey is also a good source of the trace mineral, selenium, which contributes to "thyroid hormone metabolism, antioxidant defense systems, and immune function." It also has been shown to help with cell repair and may contribute to cancer prevention. So eat lots of turkey and save some for later meals!
Turkey's not the only thing good for you. With over 200 varieties in the US, yams are a great source of vitamin B6 and potassium and fiber! Wholefoods reports "Yams' complex carbohydrates and fiber deliver the goods gradually, slowing the rate at which their sugars are released and absorbed into the bloodstream. In addition, because they're rich in fiber, yams fill you up without filling out your hips and waistline."
Combine yams with Bios Life Slim, and you'll really show your body how to control the sugars it releases. Yams have also been shown to help with menopausal systems. (Read more)
Let's not forget cranberries! The Cranberry Institute reminds us that they are loaded with anti-oxidants! "Recent scientific research shows that cranberries and cranberry products contain significant amounts of antioxidants and other phytonutrients that may help protect against heart disease, cancer and other diseases." (Learn more)
These aren't the only healthy foods in the Thanksgiving feast, so post your comments about other healthy foods you are eating this season.

Women Need Networking
One of the unique beauties of this business is the opportunities it provides to create meaningful networks. Not only do we share products that improve health, but we get to interact with people on a personal, face-to-face level and create networks. Just another way that Unicity helps to Make Life Better, in my opinion.

Election Day tomorrow!
Why vote in local elections?
- Your vote really counts. With a smaller population putting in their say, your vote can really make a difference on who gets elected.
- Local officials make decisions on important items such as snow removal, garbage pick-up, recycling and in short, how each city is managed.
- Local officials are also responsible for public safety laws and enforcement of them.
I found a website that's awesome for helping us find where our local election offices are, who the current national and state elected officials are and more. Project Vote Smart
You can also visit Smart Voter - a site run by the League of Women Voters which will also help you find voting information.
Make Life Better and participate in your local elections tomorrow.

Barb Schuman Takes First Place!
The 2009 Fall Fling 5K Race
Tradewinds Park
Coconut Creek, FL
September 19, 2009
Top Three Grand Master FEMALE
Place O'All Bib First Name Last Name Age Finish Pace
1 41 275 Barbara Schuman 56 00:25:24 8:11
2 53 151 Pamela Richardson 56 00:26:19 8:28
3 61 39 Celia Sweet 52 00:26:59 8:41
Reuters – September 21, 2009 - This just in off the wire service:
On Saturday, September 19, 2009, at 7:00 AM, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, FL was the site of “The 2009 Fall Fling” 5K Race (3.1 miles) sponsored by The Greater Fort Lauderdale Runners Club. (Yes, we know it was Rosh Hashanah, but she is not Sandy Koufax and the whole thing was over long before services started. Furthermore, the event turned into its own high holiday-equivalent religious experience.) 117 male (75) and female (42) competitors from throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties assembled for battle in the Over the Hill (ages 40+) division.
In an unprecedented and unforeseen turn of events, Barbara Schuman, running her very first race ever – a true newbie – pulled off a monumental upset, claiming first place in the Grand Master Female (age 50 – 59) division hotly contested by 18 athletes.
When adding in the 21 runners classified as Master Female (age 40 – 49), Schuman finished 4th overall of the 39 women, a mere 17 seconds out of the third position. Of the 117 total male and female competitors, Barbara finished 41st overall in her initial foray into the world of competitive track.
Her 25:24 time (8:11 minute/mile pace) was accomplished after only 5 weeks of running training in preparation for her appearance in the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) sponsored ½ marathon (13.1 miles), taking place December 6, 2009, on The Strip in Las Vegas. Barbara typically runs 3x/week with 3 to 6 mile jaunts on Tuesdays and Thursdays and longer Sunday runs. She is scheduled to tackle 9 miles this weekend.
Having been bitten by the racing bug, she is madly scouring upcoming 10K and 15K events, plotting her next appearance and conquest. Now, truth be told, lest you think Barbara is carried away with herself after this one stunning success, full disclosure dictates we acknowledge that she was bested by an 80-yr old man, who finished the race in 24.26 or a 7:52 pace!
As you know, Barbara has undertaken this challenge to raise critically needed funds for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. You can read her reasons for running on her website at http://www.active.com/donate/lv09florida/BarbaraSchuman. For those of you who have already generously supported Barbara’s efforts by making a contribution, we are very grateful. For those of you who have yet to contribute, we hope you will consider this worthy charitable cause and the tremendous amount of time and effort Barbara is investing on behalf of the CCFA.
Contributions can be made online on her website, or for those not wishing to use the online service, you can send a check made payable to CCFA to us at 6692 NW 25th Way, Boca Raton, FL 33496 and we will hand deliver it to the local CCFA office.
Again, thank you all for your support and we will keep you informed of Barbara’s progress.
Cordially,
Barbara Schuman & Neal Kaye

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Since I have seen someone close to me undergo treatment for this disease I have often wondered what causes breast cancer and how it can be prevented. While I don’t know all of the answers to these questions since they have yet to be completely answered, I have learned a few things about the subject. I know that since my mother has had breast cancer I am at a higher risk to get it. I also have been told by our family practitioner that a healthy diet and body weight is a key factor in preventing this disease and many other chronic diseases that plague Americans today.
Recently in a Bloomberg.com article, I read that while modern medicine has improved tremendously over the last few years at treating this disease, “the U.S. may be threatened by a trend among women toward obesity, a risk factor for the disease.”
An article in the Examiner said this about breast cancer and obesity, “Rising obesity rates threaten to derail the decreased breast cancer mortality rate. To avoid breast cancer fatality, it is particularly important for post-menopausal women to maintain a healthy weight through physical activity and healthy eating. From cancer.gov, obesity increases the risk of cancers of the breast (postmenopausal), endometrium (the lining of the uterus), colon, kidney, and esophagus, in addition to increasing the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. Avoiding weight gain is an effective way to decrease these risks.”
I have many amazing women in my life that exercise regularly and try to eat healthy, yet they still are overweight/obese. Losing pounds hasn’t happened for them yet and if they do lose pounds they struggle to maintain the lost weight. As a woman and with what I know about the obesity rate in America and in the lives of many women I know, I don’t want them to be in the high risk category for this dreadful disease of breast cancer.
Unicity International’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month Challenge
Introduce Slim to the women in your lives that struggle with weight and may be at risk for breast cancer. Ladies let’s do our part in the fight against breast cancer.

Cheerful women have less cardiovascular disease: study
"The study, published in the August issue of Circulation, tracked more than 97,000 postmenopausal American women for more than eight years.
Women within the highest 25 percent of optimism scores had a 9 percent lower chance of developing heart disease and a 14 percent lower chance of dying of any cause, said the study.
Women with the highest degree of cynical hostility were 16 percent more likely to die than those with the most trust in their fellow humans, according to the study.
"In addition to looking at hormones and their effect on heart disease and cancer, the study also examined psychosocial and social factors and how they affected the health of postmenopausal women," said Dr. Hilary A. Tindle, an assistant professor of medicine at the university, and lead author of the study."

Women's Health Seminar
Saturday, July 10th, over 60 women joined us after the Leadership Summit for an hour seminar and a cocktail reception. We loved being together with all of the women! After the seminar, we gathered together in the bistro for wine and cheese. Women from Europe, Canada and the US got to know each other a little better and discovered that no one has to do this business alone. As Unicity Women, we are a team!

Featured Products - Suncare!
It's summer and we're excited about playing in the sun! Don't forget that too much sun can be harmful to your skin. Here are some tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
Ultraviolet (UV) rays are an invisible form of radiation. They can penetrate
your skin and damage your skin cells. Sunburns are a sign of skin damage.
Suntans aren't healthy, either. They appear after the sun's rays have already
killed some cells and damaged others. UV rays can cause skin damage during any
season or at any temperature. They can also cause eye problems, wrinkles, skin
spots, and skin cancer.
To protect yourself
* Stay out of the sun when it is strongest (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.)
* Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher
* Wear protective clothing
* Wear wraparound sunglasses that provide 100 percent UV ray protection
* Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds
Check your skin regularly for changes in the size, shape, color or feel of
birthmarks, moles and spots. Such changes are a sign of skin cancer.
So, don't put yourself in danger! For the month of June, Unicity is featuring the E International Sun Care products! Stock up for you and your family and enjoy playing in the sun all summer long!

Emotional Spending
One study recently conducted in the UK by psychology professor Karen Pine, stated that "79% of women say that going on a spending spree would cheer them up. This indicates that some women use shopping as an emotion regulator to numb themselves to negative feelings or dissatisfaction with life."
We're not trying to say that spending is bad. It may be true, that shopping for yourself can do much to help your mood. However, if the funds to buy are not sufficient, then "money could lead women down the path to more money woes."
Any advice for those who may be looking for support?

Unicity Japan Donates to Build New Schoolhouse in Rural Thailand
Pimchanok is speechless—which is saying a lot considering she’s in first grade. She stands in awe just inside her new classroom at Ban Wang Hai School in the Nong Bua Lamphu Province of Thailand. She can smell the fresh bright pink paint and is bathed in the bright sunlight that is streaming through the windows.
“My new classroom is painted pink! I like it. It feels good when I look at it,” is all Pimchanok eventually says. Until today, Pimchanok’s classroom was a thatched-roof temporary classroom, which was dusty and hot on most days and damp during the rainy season.
Pimchanok is one of 106 students from kindergarten to grade 12 that, until now, crowded together in the few rooms of the old Ban Hai School building. To read the rest of the story, click here!Tuesday, May 12, 2009

HOW MOTHER'S DAY BEGAN
My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.
- George Washington, U.S. President
Wikipedia reveals - The modern Mother's Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis as a day for each family to honor their mother,[1] and it's now celebrated on various days in many places around the world. It complements Father's Day, the celebration honoring fathers.
This holiday is relatively modern, being created at the start of the 20th century, and should not be confused with the early pagan and Christian traditions honoring mothers, or with the 16th century celebration of Mothering Sunday, which is also known as Mother's Day in the UK.
In most countries the Mother's Day celebration is a recent holiday derived from the original US celebration. Exceptions are, for example, the Mothering Sunday holiday in the UK.
Different countries celebrate Mother's Day on various days of the year because the day has a number of different origins.[citation needed]
One school of thought[who?] claims this day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece, which kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods. This festival was held around the Vernal Equinox around Asia Minor and eventually in Rome itself from the Ides of March (15 March) to 18 March.
The ancient Romans also had another holiday, Matronalia, that was dedicated to Juno, though mothers were usually given gifts on this day.
In addition to Mother's Day, International Women's Day is celebrated in many countries on March 8. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother%27s_Day

How can I succeed as a Unicity distributor?
1. Constantly expose new people to your products and business opportunity. Go to meetings, get on conference calls, and talk to people about your business.
2. Commit yourself to personal development and self improvement. Set attainable long-term and short-term goals and stick to them.
3. Develop a strategy to help your team become self-sufficient. Make a specific game plan and share the tools and knowledge you've gained to help them succeed. You can be the best distributor in the world, but if your team isn't seeing results, they're not going to stick around.
4. Use the products. Some of the best Bios Life Slim distributors are those who have used it. If you believe in it, you can sell it. This is a very important part of MLM. People can tell if you don't believe in a product and they will not want to do business with you.
5. Never quit! Give yourself enough time to succeed. If you ask any Double Diamond, they'll tell you it didn't happen overnight. The biggest reason why most distributors quit within the first year is because they don't give themselves enough time to succeed. Give yourself enough time and always remember; success can be yours.

Are you at risk?
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, 24 million Americans have diabetes, with half of those being women. About a quarter of Americans with diabetes don't even know they have it!
Want to know if you are at risk? Here are some good indicators:
- Age — being older than 45
- Overweight or obesity
- Family history — having a mother, father, brother, or sister with diabetes
- Race/ethnicity — your family background is African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Hispanic American/Latino, Asian American/Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian
- Having a baby with a birth weight more than 9 pounds
- Having diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes)
- High blood pressure — 140/90 mmHg or higher. Both numbers are important. If one or both numbers are usually high, you have high blood pressure.
- High cholesterol — total cholesterol over 240 mg/dL
- Inactivity — exercising fewer than 3 times a week
- Abnormal results in a prior diabetes test
- Having other health conditions that are linked to problems using insulin, like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Having a history of heart disease or stroke

Staying Hydrated
Water is your body's principal chemical component, making up, on average, 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.
Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.
...if you drink enough fluid so that you rarely feel thirsty and produce 1.5 liters (6.3 cups) or more of colorless or slightly yellow urine a day, your fluid intake is probably adequate.

The Los Cabos Experience
We enjoyed paradise for a few days in Los Cabos, Mexico. All Paradise Rewards Trip qualifiers met on the beach, last Thursday, for an opening reception. Under the starry night, we mixed and mingled, starting lasting friendships.
One of the highlights of the event, was the recognition of our first female Presidential Diamond, Jan Bloom. Stewart Hughes, Chairman and CEO, and Brent Morrill, Executive Vice President presented the plaque and pin, followed by remarks from Jan. She taught us that "we are not the message, we are the messengers. When an opportunity presents itself, I am the messenger. If the opportunity does not present itself, I create an opportunity." Congratulations to Jan Bloom on her tremendous accomplishment. We look forward to much more success from her and the rest of the Unicity Women.
The chance to gather at Los Cabos as leaders of Unicity International, is priceless. Not only did the Franchise Owners qualify for pampering in a dazzling paradise, but they had the chance to mix with the very best of this business in an intimate setting not provided elsewhere. We congratulate all who qualified and encourage the rest of you to be on the next trip, no matter what it takes. You can let it change your life.
