STUDY ON SLEEP

Dr. Tom Cutler just blogged about a new study recently released regarding sleep. Researchers found that sleeping too little or TOO LONG can increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. They observed, "... that over this timespan, approximately 20% of those with long and short sleep duration developed type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance versus only 7% among subjects who were average duration sleepers." (h/t SD).

The recommended amount of sleep for adults is 7-8 hours a night. Dr. Cutler says if you have trouble sleeping, try taking Melatonin.

HAPPY EARTH DAY

What are women doing for Earth Day today?
  • In Minnesota, they are running an Earth Day Half Marathon.
  • They are hosting an Earth Day Contest where women are promising to recycle more and waste less
  • A west-coast woman celebrates with her children each year by making a cake or doing a fun activity.
  • Women are going to see Disney's new movie "Earth," released today in honor of Earth Day
  • Women are volunteering for Green Apple Festivals, happening across the nation
What can we do? UnicityWomen can start honoring the earth by recycling Unicity International paper and plastic containers. We can also use business tools to send emails and videos rather than print handouts. Overall, we can go outside to enjoy the beauty Mother Earth proudly hosts. What are YOU doing for Earth Day - post a comment!

Are you at risk?

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, 24 million Americans have diabetes, with half of those being women. About a quarter of Americans with diabetes don't even know they have it!

Want to know if you are at risk? Here are some good indicators:
  • Age — being older than 45
  • Overweight or obesity
  • Family history — having a mother, father, brother, or sister with diabetes
  • Race/ethnicity — your family background is African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Hispanic American/Latino, Asian American/Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian
  • Having a baby with a birth weight more than 9 pounds
  • Having diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes)
  • High blood pressure — 140/90 mmHg or higher. Both numbers are important. If one or both numbers are usually high, you have high blood pressure.
  • High cholesterol — total cholesterol over 240 mg/dL
  • Inactivity — exercising fewer than 3 times a week
  • Abnormal results in a prior diabetes test
  • Having other health conditions that are linked to problems using insulin, like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Having a history of heart disease or stroke

Staying Hydrated

The Mayo Clinic advises us to drink enough water in order to keep our bodies hydrated. Here's their advice:

Water is your body's principal chemical component, making up, on average, 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.

...if you drink enough fluid so that you rarely feel thirsty and produce 1.5 liters (6.3 cups) or more of colorless or slightly yellow urine a day, your fluid intake is probably adequate.

Easter Sweets - to eat or not to eat

Everyone likes to snack when the Easter Bunny brings the goodie basket. Maybe some sweets are better left in their wrapper, however. According to Women's Health Magazine, the following candies will do the most damage to your body:

Worst Calorie Offenders:
Cadbury Cream Eggs – 140 calories
Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs – 180 calories

Worst Sugar Offenders:
Jelly Belly Assorted jelly beans (35) – 28 g sugar
(Small) Cadbury Chocolate Eggs (12) – 26 g sugar

Worst Fat Offenders:
Nestle's Crunch Solid Chocolate Easter Bunny – 36.2 g of fat
Reese's Reester Bunny – 42 g of fat

So instead of popping so many sweets, consider taking your Bios Life Slim and enjoying perhaps a piece of banana bread instead. Your body will thank you!
